Pairing Old with New

When my grandmother passed away she left me several valuable home furnishings. Perhaps the best piece of all that she gave to me was an authentic Tiffany lamp. The table lamp was none other than the Venetian desk lamps made between 1910 and 1920.

The vibrant colors are still impeccable nearly a century after their creation. I decided to place the lamp on one of the end tables in my formal sitting room. The other end table looked rather lonely, so I bought a Dragonfly Tiffany style table lamp to match. The design is intentionally not identical because I didn’t want the lamps to be too matchy-matchy; however, the colors complement one another perfectly.

Iconic Dragonfly Lamp

The Tiffany dragonfly lamp is one of the most iconic lamps produced during the heyday of the Tiffany Studios. It’s probably the first image that pops into your head when somebody mentions Tiffany lamps. The original version was decorated with large dragonflies with blue bodies, purple wings, and red eyes. The background was a mix of blue-green and yellow. The head of the dragonfly hangs down with the wings forming a scalloped edge on the lampshade.

The pattern has been replicated utilizing different colors. In my own home I have a dragonfly Tiffany table lamp. The piece is a compilation of red, amber, and brown as the predominant colors. Thanks to modern technology, the lamp sheds enough light to serve as a desk light or reading nook light.

I often get asked if tiffany style lamps can be used with upholstered furniture. Well of course they can!

Immediately the assumption is that the room will become too busy. Unless the walls are covered in a wild wallpaper, that is not the case. The coloration of the lamp is the key. Purchase a lamp in the same scheme as the upholstered furniture. And note – not all tiffany lamps come with tons of varied colors, some are single colored lamps. It is the processes used in the creation and production, as well as the materials used that classify the lamps as tiffany lamps, not the number of colors.

Don’t think that your father is beyond caring what his office looks like. He entertains Mission Style Tiffany Desk Lampbusiness associates and management personnel there, and presentation is a huge part of office politics. He may have a framed personal photo on his desk, a picture on the wall or even a plant in the room. All these items humanize the room, but a tiffany desk lamp states you like the better things in life. Visual impact from your first meeting with a client can make or break a deal. As the saying goes, dress for the occassion.

Don’t be afraid to give your father something other than a tie.

A Trend Turned Legacy

One way to add a decorative feature in your home is to have a great looking table lamp. You can choose from a variety of table lamps, but Tiffany table lamps are exceptionally beautiful and attractive. They certainly aren’t the ordinary lamps that you find in stores.

With the quality and beauty inherent in each piece, Tiffany table lamps are like pieces of art. They were first made with discarded glass from stained glass window producers, and this started the trend in making beautiful lamps.  The bases and stands themselves are great decorative features as well. You will never go wrong with a Tiffany table lamp in your home.
