Setting the Mood

An accent lamp is essentially a lamp that’s primary purpose is not necessarily to light up a room, but rather to create a certain mood, and accentuate it, hence the name. Accent lamps are typically small considering the fact that they do not need to operate as a primary source of luminescence.

A Tiffany accent lamp is a particularly great way to set the mood. Not only is the lighting itself great for setting up a particular mood, but Tiffany lamps themselves are especially good at setting up a particular scene, considering the beautiful colored glass patterns that Tiffany lamps tend to have.

No Lighting at Home

My apartment didn’t come with very good lighting. Most of the rooms don’t have previously installed light fixtures in the ceiling or really anywhere, apart from a dim one in each of the bedrooms, a few in the bathrooms, and one in the kitchen. This can be a little annoying, especially in the winter, when it’s darker outside and there’s less natural light coming in.

The worst offender is the living room. Without the TV on, there’s really no light in there at all. I do, however, have a Tiffany desk lamp that lights up the room. It makes reading a lot easier and if I’ve got any work that I’ve brought home, I can do it in the living room instead of having to shut myself away in my bedroom.

Creating Your Workspace

Having a comfortable, well-organized desk is essential for creating a productive work environment. The desk can make or break your workspace. If you’re cramped and your stuff is crowding in on you, or if you have too much space and nothing is within arm reach, you’ll never experience a successful, happy day at work. Choosing a computer office desk is like choosing a bed; it’s where you will be spending most time of your time and is the focal point of the room.

So, just as much care should go into choosing your desk as would go into choosing a mattress. Make sure that you have enough room to work, but not so much that stuff is going to get lost. Shelves and drawers are always recommended, but not so many that it requires a complex organizing system. Make sure you have enough desk space for your computer and Tiffany desk lamp while still leaving space to write and work on projects.  Whatever you settle on, make sure it is something you can be comfortable spending long hours in.

60-30-10 Rule

Do you know what the 60-30-10 rule means in color selection?

Look at rooms in several designer magazines and note which ones you like. See if you notice this designer technique in most of those you selected.

The overall theme is generally 60% unifying coloration, 30% visual interest and 10% sparkle. Easily remember this formula picturing a man’s suit. The jacket and pants equal 60%, the shirt equals 30%, and the tie adds the 10% spark.

Now in your room, the walls equal the 60% coloration, the upholstery or large furniture pieces the 30% visual interest, and the 10% sparkle could be a tiffany lamp or large floral arrangement.

This particular division of color is appealing to the human eye. I cannot explain it, but it works.
